LA Riots: My Memory

File:1st Marine Division along Crenshaw.jpg
1st Marine Division along Crenshaw. Wikipedia.

Twenty Years ago someone burnt down Mr. Lims market around the corner of my house during the LA Riots. I lived in the City of Watts, CA. I always remember my brother telling my parents what was going on. And Me, having to stay in the backyard playing through the fence with my friend Vanessa because we could not go to each other's houses (next door to each other) and because we were not allowed to go due to early curfew.

I remember my teacher telling us about what was going on, more so, what was happening again. I wondered if this would happen again 30 years from now. I remember it being interesting to hear that the past was repeating itself. How they went through something similar in the 60's and now we were going through the same.

How time passes and the simple memories created during the time of other's hateful actions stay in one’s life 20 years later. I begin to wonder if there were services provided to us children in this time to process and better understand what we felt, heard, read, and saw. I don't recall. My parents and brother did a very good job in keeping me safe. But the commotion on the streets, I cannot forget.  Seeing the black owned signs, the burned buildings, The helicopters, the news, the ongoing noise, shots fired more the usual, sirens on more than usual at night while I fell asleep.

How I wish I was there then at my current state now to help.

A Cake for Kids: The Fight to Stop Obesity in Children and Teens

http://www.trendrabbit.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Kids-Destroy-Home-With-One-Bag-Of-Flour-01.jpg
LOL!

Obesity is the number one Chronic Illness in Children today.  I see parents giving children candy because they want the child to adhere to the home rules.
Moreover, I hear parents say that they would rather buy a child a cake for their good behavior, than to spend time making a mess by making a make a cake or crafting a toy... You already know where I'm going with this one...
So... this is why I bring up the cake... have some control on what a cake means. Take back the cake!  After all, aren't you the one educating the child to be a healthy individual?

Remember when a cupcakes or cakes where made as a prize, and not displayed at the dinner table for a snack or made for dinner?

Sadly, I've seen this happen in the homes too many times. It is inexpensive, the child gets fed, and the child is happy because they get their way, which stops the yelling and screaming. Please stop making cakes in replacement for dinner or to quiet the child. PLEASE STOP! You are permitting obesity in your home.

I'm not saying that cakes are bad. Making a cake with your child is messy and fun! However, what will both of you get out of making makes? What are the benefits for both you and your kid? Answer: A LOT.  Have a Plan. You can teach an array of skills while making a cake.

Benefits:

1. First of, you can educate your child on Nutrition.
  • Education: Which may be the number one thing lacking in American homes as you can see, we are obese child and teens in this country.
  • Teach about healthy eating habits
  • When eating a cake is good or bad, teach them boundaries with food.
2. You actually spend time with your child; teaching him or her skills... it it priceless.
  •  This is very important because you if you do not give your child positive attention they will act out pretty much.
3. You allow your kid to know that they are capable of doing something with help.
  • This helps them become aware that they are not alone in life.
  • That you as the parent are there to guide them and Support them.
  • That you actually took time out of your busy life to make a cake with them!
4. You show your child math, reading, comprehension skills, and life/social skills.

5. You have fun! Why not make a mess?!  After all, isn't what why we have Brawny Paper Towels for?

6. You can teach them how to dance it off and make it a you and child party.

Again, engage with your child and teaching them how to burn off all the sugar calories they ate with the piece of cake. Don't drill it on them on the info, you don't want them to become anorexic. But educate your child on nutrition. Teach them how to become better healthy Human BEANS! :-)

7. You have a healthy Child.

Everything in moderation.

My MacBook

Dear All,

So I have had my Maccy (MacBook) for a VERY loooong time now. Today it die! Out of no where! I would NOT turn on!  I felt sad, more than sad, freaked out as I was thinking that I needed replace it after -- years of having it. Nevertheless, I can say that my Mac stayed strong. Maccy had a minor surgery, in which a piece was removed and a new one implanted and I am very happy to say that I am able to write this to you on my Super Strong Maccy. What can I say? I'm very proud of this amazing machine. I really didn't want to give it up. Maccy has gotten me through a whole bunch of everything. Business, blogging (of course), shopping, Foundation, writing, paying school loans, all which I do revolves around my Maccy.

*Sigh*...Maccy is OK.

So I went shopping with my computer emergency money... And Bought me my Hudson. Hey Maccy is ok, I have to celebrate right? :-D

What we don't say...

There are times in this life time where we have to be quiet. Where everything around you may seem wrong, but at the moment we have to remain quiet, and that seem right.

WHAT?!!! Coming from a person who tells you to express your feelings?

Yes! Sometimes... you just have to shut the door.

I've come across people who will try to use your words to make it sound like you are saying something else. Sometimes, people even use your words...they just make it up. That is what what I went though this week... So I just shut the door. Why?

Honestly, I don't have the time. What we don't say sometimes can be depicted wrong. However, at the end of the day, what you have to remember is what you said. People after they get to know you, will know what you have or have not said.

Also, I have noticed that stories die down, if you allow them to. Moreover! You know better! Somethings you just have to shut the door on and not worry about them.

Just keep on on with your swag.  What we don't say will be noticed by your actions. Your actions will produce reactions. And those reactions will produce your own personal reactions.

What you think?

Am I full of it today or what?

Review on Aggressive Vs. Assertive

I find myself meeting a lot of people in this time of my life. Some have not learned the line between Being aggressive and assertive.  As you all know, I work with MANY types of personalities and I've found how to work with almost all. It is always interesting when someone tells me I'm not aggressive enough. Why? The need to be assertive is more than enough for me.

A re-cap.

Asserting yourself: This does not mean being being physically and verbally aggressive (What I tend to call Rude).

The lack of assertiveness is sometimes linked to a lack of self-image or prior life experiences. What you think of yourself is what you will project (to place onto) to others. There are many different ways to assert you.

But first:
1. Learn to understand yourself.
2. Think how you would like things to be.
3. What are the best ways to communicate what you want?

Think if the common reasons why you NEED assert yourself.
- How will asserting yourself help you increase your self (general)?

Before you assert yourself, don’t doubt yourself, know your true answer. This means be you, trust your instinct, be the person that you are and know the actions that you will do.

There are three parts of each assertive intervention:
1. Empathy/validation.
2. Statement of problem.
3. Statement of what you want. (read want vs. need)

How to be assertive:
Use assertive body language. Eye to eye, be serious, use facial expression; keep your voice calm and soft, not whiny or abrasive. Speak like you want to be spoken to and hear how you want to be heard.
Do not predict the person's actions. Or Judge the other person when communicating.
Use the "I". I want and/or need. I think, I know, WHEN I feel this due to...

Own your expressive thoughts/feeling and opinions. If you speak, know what you are saying. Think before you say something. Sometimes we get wrapped around our emotions or become stubborn with our logical thinking that we forget to own what we say or listen to the other.

Be direct with your wants and/or needs. Details are important here. And again, know what you are asking before speaking.

Sometimes life brings us moments where we need to assert ourselves and we don't have to time to think about all of this. HOWEVER, the more you practice this in a consistent basis, it will come to you natural to you. It takes 21-23 days to start a habit. Make this a positive habit.

Life Life, Love and Be balanced.

America’s Mobile Makeover Month by RadioShack

Dying to have the newest mobile gadget but can’t justify the spend? Well, it’s time to trade in your old tech items! According to a recent survey, more than 90 million adults (18+) in America have unused, outdated, or unwanted technology in their house. In addition, a third of mobile phone users report owning unused phones — and more than half of those with unused phones own two or more.

Starting April 1 and through April 28,  RadioShack challenges America to dig deep in those junk drawers, climb up in the attic, and find that box in the back of the closet – then turn those unused tech products into store credit. Gather up everything from mobile phones and laptops to digital cameras and video game consoles and bring them to your closest RadioShack. Not only will you feel better about getting rid of unwanted clutter, you’ll also get the latest in connectivity and convenience at a great value.

During America’s Mobile Makeover Month by RadioShack, RadioShack guarantees at least $30 and as much as $3001 in immediate store credit when you trade in a working mobile phone and activate a new one through this special Trade & Save promotion. If your trade-in value falls below the $30 minimum, a store associate will instantly apply a $30 credit when you purchase and activate a new mobile phone. If your trade appraises above the $30 minimum, you’ll immediately get a store gift card good online or in-store.

Through this and other trade-in specials throughout the month, an exciting Facebook and Twitter sweepstakes, and even a free App to find out what your products are worth – RadioShack aims to save Americans millions of dollars in just four weeks.

Get started at participating RadioShack stores or online at www.radioshacktradeandsave.com today.
